The Department of Music is arranging the Online Up-Close Live Dialogue with Music and Musicians Series: Vocal Health and Professional Voice Care with Dr, Kathy K. Price as the guest speaker on 27th Jan, 2021 via Zoom.

In this public lecture, Dr. Kathy K. Price addresses what we need to know to habituate excellent voice use to improve voice quality and stamina. We will learn about how the voice functions, how to provide the best environment for voice use, and some ideas or exercises for vocal health and improvements. Up-close: In Dialogue with COVID-19 & Music Creativity
During the time of the coronavirus crisis, the growing sense of alienation and isolation is impacting people’s present-day experience. With our general way of living becoming more restricted, many feel a loss of control in the face of uncertainty. Many turn to music. We are thus witnessing the blossoming of music creativity and are astounded by music’s prominence in people’s lives, such as residents singing to each other from their homes’ balconies, people using parodies to vent their frustrations, and musicians turning to multi-track videos to keep performances going online. While the above are just a few examples of COVID-related creativity, the four participants of this forum would like to use an array of local and non-local examples to ponder on the meanings of music creativity in times of crisis from frameworks reflective of their different backgrounds in cultural studies, ethnomusicology, musicology, and performance. They will unravel how COVID-related activities have not only soothed nervous, but also crossed borders, connected communities, and even empowered the less powerful in ways we may have overlooked.
Participants :
Prof. Frederick Lau (Department of Music, CUHK)
Prof. Li Siu Leung (Department of Cultural Studies, Lingnan University)
Prof. Johnny Poon (Department of Music, HKBU)
Moderator: Prof. Helan Yang (Department of Music, HKBU)

International Conference on Sounds, Images, and Texts on China's Periphery
The conference builds on the existing scholarship on issues of marginality and cultural boundaries in ethnographic and literary disciplines. Our primary purpose is to examine Chinese sounds, images, and texts in their interaction with the people and traditions on China’s geographical, racial/ethnic, and ideological peripheries. We hope to forge new grounds for the study of Chinese literature, visual and performing arts as encountering its various forms of Otherness. Topics and themes include the sounds, texts, and images of minority nationalities, subaltern soundscapes, traveling musical, textual, and visual practices, periphery as abject, performing and writing against nation, transnational imaginaries (such as the Silk Road), as well as Hong Kong, Taiwan, and other peripheral and diasporic locales. Panel sessions and papers will seek to theorize the periphery as a primary site for articulating differences and the emergence of musical, visual, and textual practices, in both historical and modern times.
