MAGNIFICENT BOWS & STRINGS RECITAL SERIES

The collection features six beautifully crafted violins made by Italian luthiers of the 19th Century. These valuable instruments have been on loan to the University through the generous support of Magnificent Bows & Strings Company Limited. The recital series aims to showcase the exquisite sounds of the violins performed by the musicians at HKBU.

Gaetano Antoniazzi, Milan, c.1885

The two-piece back of quarter-cut maple with deep, narrow and distinctive flames, mostly horizontal with the lower flames ascending from the centre joint; the ribs of similar stock to the wood of the back; the table in two pieces of pine with strong, wide grain, narrowing towards the flanks; the varnish of a red-brown colour over a golden ground.

The back of a single piece of maple with flame of medium to narrow width ascending slightly from left to right; the sides are of similar wood to that of the back; the table in two pieces of spruce with narrow to medium width grain; the red-brown varnish over a light brown ground.

The one-piece back of quarter-cut maple with handsome, narrow to medium width flames descending from the left flank; the ribs of similar stock; the table in two pieces of spruce with irregular narrow to medium width grain; the varnish of a light orange-brown colour over a glowing light-brown ground.
